Health Canada will no longer be offering letters of no objection for incidental additives and food processing aids

Health Canada recently issued a letter letting stakeholders know that the Food and Nutrition Directorate is discontinuing non-mandatory premarket review of incidental additives and food processing aids and no longer offering letters of no objection (LONO) for these classes of substances. Submissions for incidental additives and food processing aid will be accepted for premarket review until 11:59 EST on December 31, 2024. The Directorate aims to review submissions received by this deadline and issue a corresponding LONO when the outcomes of the evaluation is favourable, by March 31, 2025.

In the coming months, Health Canada will revise these two guidance documents:

·        Policy for Differentiating Food Additives and Processing Aids, to better assist industry in self-determine whether a substance is a food additive or food processing aid in a given context of use.

·        Guidelines for Incidental Additive Submissions, to ensure that food manufacturers and processors have the necessary information to safely use incidental additives within their facilities.

“Each year we are required to take a number of food safety and other related courses. The discounts we receive on these courses through our Food and Beverage Atlantic membership always pays for the cost of the membership. That alone would be reason enough to be a member, but our membership also gives us access to exclusive opportunities and support we find extremely valuable. ”
